Portage Lake

Crow Wing County, MinnesotaMesotrophic

Portage Lake sits at the top of the Minnesota PCA grading rubric with an A, a mark reached by the cleanest lakes in Minnesota. Clarity, phosphorus, and chlorophyll-a all rate similarly, so there is no obvious single lever to pull on watershed management.

Mesotrophic conditions dominate at Portage Lake: enough nutrients for a healthy fishery, not so much that algal blooms become a chronic problem. Portage Lake reaches 37 ft at its deepest point — typical for Minnesota mid-sized lakes, with seasonal stratification but limited cold-water refuge. At 287 acres, Portage Lake fits the Minnesota median for monitored lakes, with 2.6 miles of shoreline. Among the 120 graded lakes in Crow Wing County, Portage Lake sits at rank 56, above the county median.

Eurasian watermilfoil has been documented at Portage Lake, requiring shoreline management to keep dense mats from crowding native vegetation. The fishery includes walleye alongside the lake's other 15 documented species — a notable draw for Minnesota anglers. The lake lacks a documented public access point, so visitor use is limited. The lake has a long ice-out record — 27 observations on file, with a median ice-out around Apr 16. The grade is based on limited monitoring — fewer than three independent measurement years contribute, so future updates may shift the letter.

From the 2025-06-16 survey

A targeted survey of nearshore fish species in Portage Lake was conducted on June 16, 2025, by Lake Biological Monitoring and Assessment (LBMA) Program staff. Sampling sites were evenly spaced around the lake, and each was sampled by backpack electrofishing and seining with a 50-foot or 15-foot seine, where possible.…
