Frequently Asked Questions

When does the Minnesota fishing opener happen?

Minnesota's general fishing opener (walleye, northern pike, lake trout) falls on the Saturday closest to May 12 each year. Bass season opens later — late May for catch-and-release, mid-June for harvest in many lakes. Panfish are open year-round on most waters.

When does the Wisconsin fishing opener happen?

Wisconsin's general inland fishing opener falls on the first Saturday in May. Some species and waters have continuous open seasons (panfish, largemouth bass on many lakes, year-round catch-and-release on others).

What is the statewide walleye limit in Minnesota?

Statewide MN: 6 walleye daily, only 1 over 20 inches. Many lakes have stricter limits (Mille Lacs, Leech, Lake of the Woods, Rainy). Check the per-lake page for special rules.

What is the statewide walleye limit in Wisconsin?

Northern WI zone: 5 walleye daily, 15-inch minimum. Southern zone: 5 daily, no minimum but some 18–20" protected slots. Lake-specific bag limits below 5 apply on many waters — check the per-lake page or WI DNR.

Are there special regulations on my lake?

Many MN lakes have lake-specific rules from MN DNR — typically walleye or northern pike length cutoffs, bag limits below the statewide standard, or seasonal closures. Use the search or featured lists below to find your lake. 30 lakes in our database currently have special rules on file.

Do I need a fishing license?

Yes. Anyone 16 or older needs a current state fishing license. Trout, salmon, sturgeon, and (in WI) musky require additional stamps. Buy online at the MN DNR or WI DNR website, or at any authorized retailer.
