Sand Lake

Pine County, MinnesotaLimited DataMesotrophic

Sand Lake carries a solid B grade — strong on most parameters, with measurements that hold up well across the summer season. The three sub-grades — clarity, phosphorus, and chlorophyll-a — track close together, so no single parameter is dragging the average.

The lake sits in the mesotrophic zone — the band where most well-managed Minnesota lakes fall. Sand Lake reaches 47 ft at its deepest point — typical for Minnesota mid-sized lakes, with seasonal stratification but limited cold-water refuge. Sand Lake covers 527 acres alongside 6.9 miles of shoreline — a mid-sized water that supports a working fishery without being so large that conditions diverge between basins. Among the 19 graded lakes in Pine County, Sand Lake ranks 4 — in the top quartile locally.

Eurasian watermilfoil has been documented at Sand Lake, requiring shoreline management to keep dense mats from crowding native vegetation. Sand Lake's fishery is anchored by muskellunge, with 15 documented species in total — a destination water for muskie anglers. A documented public access point at Sand Lake makes the lake usable for shore fishing, paddle craft, and trailered boats. Ice-out has been recorded 20 times at Sand Lake, with a median around Apr 19. Monitoring depth is thin here: the LakeGrade rubric is applied to a small number of sample years, and the grade will be revised as more data accumulates.

From the 2025-07-07 survey

A targeted survey of nearshore fish species in Sand Lake was conducted on July 7- 9, 2025, by Lake Biological Monitoring and Assessment Program (LBMA) staff. Sampling sites were evenly spaced around the lake, and each was sampled by backpack electrofishing and seining with a 50-foot or 15-foot seine, where possible.…
