Cruiser Lake

St. Louis County, MinnesotaOligotrophic

Cruiser Lake earns an A — water clarity, phosphorus, and chlorophyll-a all rate among the best monitored waters in St. Louis County. Clarity, phosphorus, and chlorophyll-a all rate similarly, so there is no obvious single lever to pull on watershed management.

A TSI value of 29 puts Cruiser Lake in the oligotrophic range, where biological productivity stays low and the water column remains clear. Cruiser Lake is unusually deep for Minnesota at 91 ft, which buffers the lake against summer warming and helps the deep water stay oxygenated. Cruiser Lake covers 118 acres alongside 3.4 miles of shoreline — a mid-sized water that supports a working fishery without being so large that conditions diverge between basins. Among the 187 graded lakes in St. Louis County, Cruiser Lake ranks 24 — in the top quartile locally.

Cruiser Lake has no invasive species recorded in Minnesota state databases as of 2024, though prevention practices still apply at all access points. The lake's fish records list 2 species — a varied community without one dominant gamefish. No formal public access is documented at Cruiser Lake — most use is by shoreline residents and their guests. The grade is based on limited monitoring — fewer than three independent measurement years contribute, so future updates may shift the letter.
