Rabbit Lake

Aitkin County, MinnesotaLimited DataMesotrophic

Rabbit Lake earns a C — middle-of-the-pack water quality, with one or two parameters dragging the average down from a stronger grade.

Mesotrophic conditions dominate at Rabbit Lake: enough nutrients for a healthy fishery, not so much that algal blooms become a chronic problem. The lake's 51 ft maximum depth is in the upper tier for Minnesota — deep enough for cold-water fish to find refuge in summer. At 212 acres, Rabbit Lake fits the Minnesota median for monitored lakes, with 4.6 miles of shoreline. Within Aitkin County's 53 graded lakes, Rabbit Lake ranks 30 — below the local median, though not at the bottom.

Rabbit Lake has no invasive species recorded in Minnesota state databases as of 2024, though prevention practices still apply at all access points. Walleye are documented at Rabbit Lake, one of 13 fish species on record for the lake. Public access is available — the lake is on the Minnesota PCA public-access list. The lake has a partial ice record — 17 observed ice-outs, centered near Apr 14. The grade is based on limited monitoring — fewer than three independent measurement years contribute, so future updates may shift the letter.
