Meander Lake
St. Louis County, MinnesotaLimited DataOligotrophic
Meander Lake earns an A — water clarity, phosphorus, and chlorophyll-a all rate among the best monitored waters in St. Louis County. Clarity, phosphorus, and chlorophyll-a all rate similarly, so there is no obvious single lever to pull on watershed management.
Trophically, Meander Lake reads as oligotrophic — nutrient-poor, clear, and ecologically more sensitive to disturbance than richer lakes. The lake's maximum depth is not yet documented in state morphometric records — context for its physical structure remains limited. The lake is compact at 99 acres, with 2.1 miles of shoreline and little volume to buffer nutrient inputs. Within St. Louis County's 187 graded waters, Meander Lake sits at rank 27, near the top of the local distribution.
Meander Lake has no invasive species recorded in Minnesota state databases as of 2021, though prevention practices still apply at all access points. Bass fishing is part of the appeal: the species list runs to 4, anchored by largemouth and/or smallmouth bass. A documented public access point at Meander Lake makes the lake usable for shore fishing, paddle craft, and trailered boats. The grade is based on limited monitoring — fewer than three independent measurement years contribute, so future updates may shift the letter.
