Adney Lake

Crow Wing County, MinnesotaLimited DataOligotrophic

On the LakeGrade rubric, Adney Lake pulls an A: clarity at 16.0 ft and phosphorus readings still being added put it in the top bracket for Minnesota. Sub-grades cluster within a single letter of each other, which usually means the lake is in stable trophic balance rather than fighting one specific stressor.

A TSI value of 37 puts Adney Lake in the oligotrophic range, where biological productivity stays low and the water column remains clear. Adney Lake reaches 27 ft at its deepest point — typical for Minnesota mid-sized lakes, with seasonal stratification but limited cold-water refuge. At 310 acres, Adney Lake fits the Minnesota median for monitored lakes, with 2.9 miles of shoreline. Adney Lake ranks 46 of 120 in Crow Wing County — solidly in the upper half of the local distribution.

Adney Lake has no invasive species recorded in Minnesota state databases as of 2024, though prevention practices still apply at all access points. Bass fishing is part of the appeal: the species list runs to 12, anchored by largemouth and/or smallmouth bass. A documented public access point at Adney Lake makes the lake usable for shore fishing, paddle craft, and trailered boats. Monitoring depth is thin here: the LakeGrade rubric is applied to a small number of sample years, and the grade will be revised as more data accumulates.

From the 2024-06-10 survey

A targeted survey of nearshore fish species in Adney Lake was conducted beginning June 10th, 2024, by Index of Biological Integrity (IBI) Program staff. Sampling sites were evenly spaced around the lake, and each was sampled by backpack electrofishing and seining with a 50-foot or 15-foot seine, where possible.…
