Dade Lake
Cass County, MinnesotaMesotrophic
Dade Lake carries a solid B grade — strong on most parameters, with measurements that hold up well across the summer season. Clarity is the limiting factor — phosphorus is reasonable but suspended particles or algal cells keep water transparency below Minnesota norms.
The lake sits in the mesotrophic zone — the band where most well-managed Minnesota lakes fall. The lake's maximum depth is not yet documented in state morphometric records — context for its physical structure remains limited. At 99 acres, Dade Lake sits below the Minnesota median: a small water where shoreline activity has an outsized effect on water quality. Dade Lake ranks 117 of 133 in Cass County — at the lower end of the locally monitored distribution.
Zebra mussels have been documented at Dade Lake, which alters the filter-feeding balance and can paradoxically increase water clarity while disrupting the food web. Bass fishing is part of the appeal: the species list runs to 4, anchored by largemouth and/or smallmouth bass. A documented public access point at Dade Lake makes the lake usable for shore fishing, paddle craft, and trailered boats. The grade is based on limited monitoring — fewer than three independent measurement years contribute, so future updates may shift the letter.

DNR Fisheries Survey Summary
1 survey on file from MN DNR Fisheries. Most recent: 2014-05-05 (Targeted Survey).
Top Species by Catch Rate
| Species | Avg CPUE | Avg Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow Perch | 6.67 | 0.06 lb |
| Northern Pike | 1.33 | 2.04 lb |
| Largemouth Bass | 0.33 | 3.21 lb |
| Pumpkinseed | 0.33 | 0.37 lb |
CPUE = catch per unit effort, averaged across surveys (excludes juvenile shoreline seining). Higher CPUE = more abundant in standardized sampling.
Length Distributions
Number of fish caught at each inch class in the most recent survey that recorded lengths. Red dashed line marks an approximate trophy threshold for that species.

From the 2014-05-05 survey
Three 3/8" trap nets were set on May 5, 2014 and lifted May 6, 2014 to assess winterkill in Dade Lake. Some fish species sampled included one largemouth bass with a length of 18", one pumpkinseed at 7.5", 4 northern pike with a size range of 19"-24", and 20 yellow perch with a size range of 4"-5.5".
