Sugar Lake

Wright County, MinnesotaOligotrophic

Sugar Lake earns an A — water clarity, phosphorus, and chlorophyll-a all rate among the best monitored waters in Wright County. Clarity, phosphorus, and chlorophyll-a all rate similarly, so there is no obvious single lever to pull on watershed management.

The lake's low TSI puts it in oligotrophic territory — the cleanest of the four trophic classes, but also the most vulnerable to nutrient-driven shifts. The lake's 69 ft maximum depth is in the upper tier for Minnesota — deep enough for cold-water fish to find refuge in summer. At 1,014 acres, Sugar Lake is one of the larger lakes in Wright County, with 8.7 miles of shoreline supporting multiple distinct use patterns. Sugar Lake ranks 7 of 64 in Wright County, putting it in the upper tier of locally monitored lakes.

Zebra mussels have been documented at Sugar Lake, which alters the filter-feeding balance and can paradoxically increase water clarity while disrupting the food web. Muskie are on the species list at Sugar Lake, alongside the lake's 16 other documented fish. Public access is available — the lake is on the Minnesota PCA public-access list. The lake has a partial ice record — 19 observed ice-outs, centered near Apr 20. Monitoring depth is thin here: the LakeGrade rubric is applied to a small number of sample years, and the grade will be revised as more data accumulates.

CPUE = catch per unit effort, averaged across surveys (excludes juvenile shoreline seining). Higher CPUE = more abundant in standardized sampling.

From the 2025-07-08 survey

A targeted survey of nearshore fish species in Sugar Lake was conducted on July 8-9th, 2025, by Area Fisheries staff. Sampling sites were evenly spaced around the lake, and each was sampled by backpack electrofishing and seining with a 50-foot or 15-foot seine, where possible. Backpack electrofishing was completed at…
