Mitchell Lake

Sherburne County, MinnesotaMesotrophic

On the LakeGrade rubric, Mitchell Lake pulls an A: clarity at 10.0 ft and 15 µg/L of phosphorus put it in the top bracket for Minnesota. Sub-grades cluster within a single letter of each other, which usually means the lake is in stable trophic balance rather than fighting one specific stressor.

The lake sits in the mesotrophic zone — the band where most well-managed Minnesota lakes fall. A maximum depth of 33 ft puts Mitchell Lake in the middle of Minnesota's depth distribution. Mitchell Lake covers 170 acres alongside 2.2 miles of shoreline — a mid-sized water that supports a working fishery without being so large that conditions diverge between basins. Within Sherburne County's 24 graded waters, Mitchell Lake sits at rank 4, near the top of the local distribution.

Zebra mussels have been documented at Mitchell Lake, which alters the filter-feeding balance and can paradoxically increase water clarity while disrupting the food web. The fishery includes walleye alongside the lake's other 13 documented species — a notable draw for Minnesota anglers. The lake lacks a documented public access point, so visitor use is limited. The lake has a partial ice record — 23 observed ice-outs, centered near Apr 6. The grade is based on limited monitoring — fewer than three independent measurement years contribute, so future updates may shift the letter.

From the 2019-06-19 survey

A targeted survey of the nearshore fish community was conducted on June 19, 2019 by Fisheries Lake IBI program staff. Sampling stations were evenly spaced around the lake and each was sampled by backpack electrofishing and seining with a 50-foot or 15-foot seine, where possible. Backpack electrofishing was completed…
