Julia Lake

Sherburne County, MinnesotaEutrophic

Julia Lake earns a D — measurements through 2023 show persistent nutrient pressure that limits clarity through the summer. The three sub-grades — clarity, phosphorus, and chlorophyll-a — track close together, so no single parameter is dragging the average.

At a TSI of 67, Julia Lake reads as eutrophic — nutrient-rich enough that summer algal growth and reduced clarity are expected, not unusual. Julia Lake reaches 15 ft at its deepest point — typical for Minnesota mid-sized lakes, with seasonal stratification but limited cold-water refuge. Julia Lake covers 154 acres alongside 2.3 miles of shoreline — a mid-sized water that supports a working fishery without being so large that conditions diverge between basins. Julia Lake ranks 20 of 24 in Sherburne County — at the lower end of the locally monitored distribution.

No invasive species are currently listed at Julia Lake — the lake remains off the Minnesota infested-waters roster. The fishery includes walleye alongside the lake's other 18 documented species — a notable draw for Minnesota anglers. Public access is available — the lake is on the Minnesota PCA public-access list. Ice-out has been recorded 17 times at Julia Lake, with a median around Apr 2. Monitoring depth is thin here: the LakeGrade rubric is applied to a small number of sample years, and the grade will be revised as more data accumulates.
