East Twin Lake

Anoka County, MinnesotaMesotrophic

East Twin Lake carries a solid B grade — strong on most parameters, with measurements that hold up well across the summer season. Clarity, phosphorus, and chlorophyll-a all rate similarly, so there is no obvious single lever to pull on watershed management.

The lake sits in the mesotrophic zone — the band where most well-managed Minnesota lakes fall. East Twin Lake is unusually deep for Minnesota at 68 ft, which buffers the lake against summer warming and helps the deep water stay oxygenated. The lake is compact at 92 acres, with 2.2 miles of shoreline and little volume to buffer nutrient inputs. Among the 24 graded lakes in Anoka County, East Twin Lake ranks 2 — in the top quartile locally.

No invasive species are currently listed at East Twin Lake — the lake remains off the Minnesota infested-waters roster. Bass fishing is part of the appeal: the species list runs to 12, anchored by largemouth and/or smallmouth bass. Public access is available — the lake is on the Minnesota PCA public-access list. Multiple sampling years from Minnesota PCA volunteers and partner agencies back the grade, so the letter should hold steady absent a major watershed shift.

From the 2024-07-08 survey

A targeted survey of nearshore fish species in East Twin Lake was conducted on July 8 - 10, 2024, by Index of Biological Integrity (IBI) Program staff. Sampling sites were evenly spaced around the lake, and each was sampled by backpack electrofishing and seining with a 50-foot or 15-foot seine, where possible.…
