Lake Helen

The lake sits in the mesotrophic zone — the band where most well-managed Wisconsin lakes fall. The lake bottoms out at 20 ft — a moderate depth that supports a warm-water fishery without the year-round cold refuge a deeper basin provides. At 89 acres, Lake Helen sits below the Wisconsin median: a small water where shoreline activity has an outsized effect on water quality. Among the 28 graded lakes in Portage County, Lake Helen ranks 6 — in the top quartile locally.

Zebra mussel presence at Lake Helen means the lake's clarity numbers carry an asterisk — filtered water is not the same as nutrient-poor water. Bass fishing is part of the appeal: the species list runs to 3, anchored by largemouth and/or smallmouth bass. Public access is available — the lake is on the Wisconsin DNR public-access list.
