Lake Beulah

Lake Beulah sits at the top of the Wisconsin DNR grading rubric with an A, a mark reached by the cleanest lakes in Wisconsin. Clarity, phosphorus, and chlorophyll-a all rate similarly, so there is no obvious single lever to pull on watershed management.

Mesotrophic conditions dominate at Lake Beulah: enough nutrients for a healthy fishery, not so much that algal blooms become a chronic problem. Lake Beulah is unusually deep for Wisconsin at 58 ft, which buffers the lake against summer warming and helps the deep water stay oxygenated. The lake's 812 acres and partial shoreline records put it in the mid-range bucket — large enough for varied use, small enough that watershed inputs reach the whole basin. Lake Beulah ranks 5 of 35 in Walworth County, putting it in the upper tier of locally monitored lakes.

Lake Beulah is on the Wisconsin infested-waters list for zebra mussels — boaters should follow clean-drain-dry protocols when moving gear to or from the lake. Bass fishing is part of the appeal: the species list runs to 3, anchored by largemouth and/or smallmouth bass. A documented public access point at Lake Beulah makes the lake usable for shore fishing, paddle craft, and trailered boats. The grade is based on limited monitoring — fewer than three independent measurement years contribute, so future updates may shift the letter.
