These are the highest-graded lakes in each of the 11 states we cover, ranked by water clarity, phosphorus, and algae from EPA and state DNR monitoring data. Each state's clearest water reflects its geology and land use as much as any single lake — deep northern lakes top the list, shallow agricultural ones sit lower.

How we pick the clearest water

The pick is grade-first, clarity-second. A lake's overall grade blends three measurements: Secchi depth (how far you can see into the water), total phosphorus (the nutrient that feeds algae), and chlorophyll-a (the algae itself). When two lakes tie on grade, the one with greater clarity ranks higher. That is why the leaders tend to be deep, cold lakes with low nutrients — the same conditions that produce a Secchi reading of 20 feet or more. The complete scoring is on the methodology page.

Why geography decides the winners

Clarity is mostly a function of the land around a lake, not the lake alone. Three factors dominate:

  • Geology — sandy and rocky basins release little phosphorus, while nutrient-rich glacial and prairie soils feed algae.
  • Depth — deep, cold lakes stratify in summer, keeping nutrients locked below the surface and starving algae of the warm, sunlit water they need.
  • Land use — forested and protected watersheds send clean runoff; farmed and developed watersheds send phosphorus.

Each state's pick is the lake with the highest overall water-quality grade, computed from Secchi depth (clarity), total phosphorus, and chlorophyll-a. Lakes with only a single parameter of data are excluded so the ranking rests on complete records, not thin ones.

Geology, depth, and land use decide it. Deep, cold lakes in forested northern watersheds hold clarity because little phosphorus reaches them and cold water slows algae. Shallow lakes surrounded by farmland carry heavy nutrient loads and stay greener no matter how well they are managed.

A high grade reflects long-term water quality, not day-of conditions. A clean lake can still have a temporary algae bloom after a warm, calm stretch. Always check your state's beach and algae advisories before swimming, and avoid any water with visible green scum.

Clarity is measured with a Secchi disk — a black-and-white plate lowered until it disappears from view. The depth at which it vanishes, reported here in feet, is a direct proxy for how much algae and sediment are suspended in the water. More feet means clearer water.
