Courthouse Lake

Carver County, MinnesotaOligotrophic

Courthouse Lake earns an A — water clarity, phosphorus, and chlorophyll-a all rate among the best monitored waters in Carver County. Sub-grades cluster within a single letter of each other, which usually means the lake is in stable trophic balance rather than fighting one specific stressor.

The lake's low TSI puts it in oligotrophic territory — the cleanest of the four trophic classes, but also the most vulnerable to nutrient-driven shifts. The lake's 57 ft maximum depth is in the upper tier for Minnesota — deep enough for cold-water fish to find refuge in summer. The lake is compact at 12 acres, with 0.7 miles of shoreline and little volume to buffer nutrient inputs. Courthouse Lake ranks 2 of 40 in Carver County, putting it in the upper tier of locally monitored lakes.

Eurasian watermilfoil has been documented at Courthouse Lake, requiring shoreline management to keep dense mats from crowding native vegetation. Walleye are documented at Courthouse Lake, one of 10 fish species on record for the lake. No formal public access is documented at Courthouse Lake — most use is by shoreline residents and their guests. The grade is based on limited monitoring — fewer than three independent measurement years contribute, so future updates may shift the letter.

From the 1994-09-07 survey

The Courthouse Lake fish population has changed significantly in recent years due to flooding. The 1993 flood allowed many species found in the Minnesota River to migrate into the lake, including northern pike. Since Courthouse is a designated trout lake, northern pike are not a desirable species to have present.…
