Two Rivers Lake

Stearns County, MinnesotaLimited DataMesotrophic

Two Rivers Lake carries a solid B grade — strong on most parameters, with measurements that hold up well across the summer season. Sub-grades cluster within a single letter of each other, which usually means the lake is in stable trophic balance rather than fighting one specific stressor.

A TSI near 42 places Two Rivers Lake in the mesotrophic band — moderate productivity, with seasonal swings between clearer spring water and richer late-summer conditions. Two Rivers Lake is unusually deep for Minnesota at 63 ft, which buffers the lake against summer warming and helps the deep water stay oxygenated. Two Rivers Lake covers 583 acres alongside 6.6 miles of shoreline — a mid-sized water that supports a working fishery without being so large that conditions diverge between basins. Among the 55 graded lakes in Stearns County, Two Rivers Lake sits at rank 18, above the county median.

Starry stonewort has been recorded at Two Rivers Lake — a relatively new invasive in Minnesota that forms dense, hard-to-remove mats. Walleye are documented at Two Rivers Lake, one of 17 fish species on record for the lake. Public access is available — the lake is on the Minnesota PCA public-access list. The lake has a partial ice record — 5 observed ice-outs, centered near Apr 7. The grade is based on limited monitoring — fewer than three independent measurement years contribute, so future updates may shift the letter.

From the 2024-07-08 survey

A targeted survey of nearshore fish species in Two Rivers Lake was conducted beginning July 8th, 2024, by Index of Biological Integrity (IBI) Program staff. Sampling sites were evenly spaced around the lake, and each was sampled by backpack electrofishing and seining with a 50-foot or 15-foot seine, where possible.…
