Rock Lake

Wright County, MinnesotaLimited DataMesotrophic

Rock Lake earns a C — middle-of-the-pack water quality, with one or two parameters dragging the average down from a stronger grade.

A TSI near 48 places Rock Lake in the mesotrophic band — moderate productivity, with seasonal swings between clearer spring water and richer late-summer conditions. The lake bottoms out at 37 ft — a moderate depth that supports a warm-water fishery without the year-round cold refuge a deeper basin provides. At 183 acres, Rock Lake fits the Minnesota median for monitored lakes, with 3.0 miles of shoreline. Among the 64 graded lakes in Wright County, Rock Lake sits at rank 25, above the county median.

Eurasian watermilfoil is established at Rock Lake, which can dampen recreational access and pressure the native plant community. Walleye are documented at Rock Lake, one of 15 fish species on record for the lake. A documented public access point at Rock Lake makes the lake usable for shore fishing, paddle craft, and trailered boats. Monitoring depth is thin here: the LakeGrade rubric is applied to a small number of sample years, and the grade will be revised as more data accumulates.

From the 2025-08-11 survey

A targeted survey of nearshore fish species in Rock Lake, was conducted on August 11th, 2025, by Area Fisheries staff. Sampling sites were evenly spaced around the lake, and each was sampled by backpack electrofishing and seining with a 50-foot or 15-foot seine, where possible. Backpack electrofishing was completed at…
