Rove Lake

Rove Lake sits at a C on the grading scale — not impaired, not pristine, with summer measurements that vary year to year.

A TSI near 45 places Rove Lake in the mesotrophic band — moderate productivity, with seasonal swings between clearer spring water and richer late-summer conditions. The lake's 130 ft maximum depth is in the upper tier for Minnesota — deep enough for cold-water fish to find refuge in summer. At 1,344 acres, Rove Lake is one of the larger lakes in Cook County, with 18.5 miles of shoreline supporting multiple distinct use patterns. Within Cook County's 128 graded lakes, Rove Lake ranks 92 — below the local median, though not at the bottom.

Rove Lake has no invasive species recorded in Minnesota state databases as of 2024, though prevention practices still apply at all access points. Bass fishing is part of the appeal: the species list runs to 7, anchored by largemouth and/or smallmouth bass. A documented public access point at Rove Lake makes the lake usable for shore fishing, paddle craft, and trailered boats. Ice-out has been logged at Rove Lake more than two dozen times, putting the median around May 5 — a useful baseline for tracking climate trends.
