Chub Lake
Dakota County, MinnesotaLimited DataHypereutrophic
Chub Lake grades an F: every scored parameter (clarity) rates poorly, placing it among the most stressed lakes monitored in Minnesota.
The hypereutrophic status — TSI 87 — reflects sustained heavy nutrient loading from the surrounding watershed and frequent algal pressure. Chub Lake is a shallow lake at 10 ft maximum depth, which means it warms quickly, mixes constantly, and amplifies nutrient inputs. Chub Lake covers 228 acres alongside 3.7 miles of shoreline — a mid-sized water that supports a working fishery without being so large that conditions diverge between basins. Chub Lake ranks 28 of 36 in Dakota County — at the lower end of the locally monitored distribution.
Chub Lake has no invasive species recorded in Minnesota state databases as of 2024, though prevention practices still apply at all access points. The state fisheries records do not list documented species for Chub Lake, which usually reflects a lack of formal fisheries survey work rather than an empty lake. No formal public access is documented at Chub Lake — most use is by shoreline residents and their guests. The grade is based on limited monitoring — fewer than three independent measurement years contribute, so future updates may shift the letter.
