Chub Lake

Chub Lake grades an F: water clarity, phosphorus, and chlorophyll-a all rate poorly, placing it among the most stressed lakes monitored in Minnesota. The three sub-grades — clarity, phosphorus, and chlorophyll-a — track close together, so no single parameter is dragging the average.

A TSI above 70 puts Chub Lake in hypereutrophic territory: visible blooms are common, and clarity rarely climbs even in early summer. At only 10 ft deep, Chub Lake is shallow — wind keeps the water column mixed and sediment resuspension drives phosphorus levels harder to manage. Chub Lake covers 228 acres alongside 3.7 miles of shoreline — a mid-sized water that supports a working fishery without being so large that conditions diverge between basins. Chub Lake ranks 28 of 36 in Dakota County — at the lower end of the locally monitored distribution.

No invasive species are currently listed at Chub Lake — the lake remains off the Minnesota infested-waters roster. The state fisheries records do not list documented species for Chub Lake, which usually reflects a lack of formal fisheries survey work rather than an empty lake. No formal public access is documented at Chub Lake — most use is by shoreline residents and their guests.
