Chub Lake
Dakota County, MinnesotaLimited DataHypereutrophic
Chub Lake grades an F: water clarity, phosphorus, and chlorophyll-a all rate poorly, placing it among the most stressed lakes monitored in Minnesota. The three sub-grades — clarity, phosphorus, and chlorophyll-a — track close together, so no single parameter is dragging the average.
A TSI above 70 puts Chub Lake in hypereutrophic territory: visible blooms are common, and clarity rarely climbs even in early summer. At only 10 ft deep, Chub Lake is shallow — wind keeps the water column mixed and sediment resuspension drives phosphorus levels harder to manage. Chub Lake covers 228 acres alongside 3.7 miles of shoreline — a mid-sized water that supports a working fishery without being so large that conditions diverge between basins. Chub Lake ranks 28 of 36 in Dakota County — at the lower end of the locally monitored distribution.
No invasive species are currently listed at Chub Lake — the lake remains off the Minnesota infested-waters roster. The state fisheries records do not list documented species for Chub Lake, which usually reflects a lack of formal fisheries survey work rather than an empty lake. No formal public access is documented at Chub Lake — most use is by shoreline residents and their guests. The grade is based on limited monitoring — fewer than three independent measurement years contribute, so future updates may shift the letter.

| Species | Avg CPUE | Avg Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Green Sunfish | 91.00 | 0.1 lb |
| Black Bullhead | 83.60 | 0.17 lb |
| Common Carp | 0.60 | 3.4 lb |
CPUE = catch per unit effort, averaged across surveys (excludes juvenile shoreline seining). Higher CPUE = more abundant in standardized sampling.
From the 1985-08-05 survey
CARP WERE FOUND AT BELOW LOCAL MEDIAN NUMBERS. BLACK BULLHEAD AND GREEN SUNFISH WERE SAMPLED AT LEVELS MUCH ABOVE THE LOCAL MEDIANS. NO GAMEFISH WERE SAMPLED. SOUTHERN REDBELLY DACE, MIMIC SHINER FATHEAD MINNOW AND CENTRAL MUDMINNOW WERE SAMPLED BY SHORELINE SEINE.
