Ice Thickness Guidelines
The Minnesota DNR’s position is worth reading before any number on this page: “There is no such thing as 100 percent safe ice.” Ice strength cannot be judged by appearance, age, thickness, or temperature alone, and ice is seldom the same thickness across a single lake — the DNR notes it “can be two feet thick in one place and one inch thick a few yards away.” The thickness figures below are minimums for new, clear ice, published by the agency. They are a starting point for your own judgment, not a guarantee.

Our per-lake ice pages report historical freeze-up and ice-out dates from DNR observation records — not current conditions, and not a verdict on whether any lake is safe. Measure the ice yourself, and check your state agency for current advisories.
Minimum ice thickness by activity

Double every figure on white ice
The table above is for new, clear ice that froze directly from lake water. White ice — refrozen, air-trapped snow — is, in the DNR’s words, “only about half as strong as new, clear ice.” Their instruction is direct: “Double the above thickness guidelines when traveling on white ice.” So 4 inches on foot becomes 8; 9–10 inches for a small car becomes 18–20.
What weakens ice
Thickness is one variable. These are the factors the Minnesota DNR flags as reducing ice strength, often invisibly:
- Snow cover — Insulates the ice and slows freezing, and its weight reduces how much load the ice can carry.
- Current and flowing water — Ice near streams, bridges, culverts, and river bends is especially dangerous — moving water thins ice from below.
- Temperature swings — Booming and cracking are the ice expanding and contracting. Repeated thaw and refreeze weakens it.
- Fish and waterfowl — Their movement can bring warmer water up from the lake bottom and open holes in otherwise solid ice.
- Proximity to shore — Ice near shore is often weaker than ice farther out, which catches people on the way in and out.
- Old ice — Partially thawed old ice is weaker than newly formed clear ice of the same thickness.
- White ice — Refrozen snow, roughly half the strength of new clear ice. The DNR says to double every thickness figure on white ice.
How to check it yourself
The agencies are consistent that measuring is the individual’s job, because no one else is doing it for you:
- Measure repeatedly, not once. Drill or chisel a test hole near shore, then re-check every 100 to 150 feet as you go out. Thickness changes across a lake.
- Never go alone, and tell someone your plan and your expected return.
- Carry ice picks where you can reach them, plus a length of rope, and wear a flotation device.
- Know how to get out of a vehicle before you drive one onto ice, and unbuckle and open a window first.
- Call ahead. Local bait shops and resorts track conditions lake by lake and know where the current, springs, and aerators are.
Where the freeze and thaw dates come in
Knowing when a lake typically freezes over and when ice-out usually arrives tells you which end of the season you are in — useful for planning, useless for judging today’s ice. Early and late season are when the margin is thinnest, and the year-to-year swing on any lake runs to weeks.

If someone goes through
Do not run to the hole — you become the second victim. Call 911, then reach, throw, or extend something from solid ice: a rope, a branch, a ladder, jumper cables. If you go through yourself, the Minnesota DNR’s guidance is to control your breathing through the initial cold shock, turn back toward the direction you came from (that ice held you), get your arms onto the surface and kick to work yourself out, then roll away rather than stand. Get to warmth immediately afterward — hypothermia continues to develop after you are out.
