Colorado Lake Water Quality

Water quality grades for 118 monitored lakes across 49 counties.

Colorado has 118 graded lakes in our dataset, sampled across 49 counties, drawing on monitoring by the Water Quality Control Division of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment plus federal and volunteer measurements. A-grade lakes are scarce in Colorado: about 8% of the dataset. Most lakes here sit in C or D — productive, often shallow, frequently algal in late summer.

Mesotrophic is the dominant trophic class — a workable middle ground between the pristine oligotrophic deep lakes and the algal-pressured eutrophic shallow ones. Pueblo ranks highest on average county grade (A). Adams sits lowest. With only 49 counties in the state, the cross-county spread is narrower than the within-county spread for most lakes.

Grade Distribution

All 118 Colorado lakes in the index: 60 (50.8%) carry an A–F grade and 58 (49.2%) are not rated, because they lack enough recent nutrient or algae sampling to support a letter.
